My Internship Experience with Sony Research India

Here’s a story of one such intern whose curiosity to create, innovate, and invent has been contributing to our cause.
Shubham Garg is a Human Resources intern at Sony Research India, pursuing his tenure at the firm with a passion for research and innovation. He gives us an insight into his experiences with Sony Research India, as an individual with certain disadvantages who never let them stand in the way of his success.
“One of the primary reasons I applied to work at Sony Research India was that it carries both the brand value of one of the world’s biggest MNCs and is a start-up that was established about a year ago. Becoming a part of Sony Research India would not only provide me with an amazing opportunity to work with highly skilled and insightful people, but also the needed exposure to global practices and the ability to learn from cross-cultural teams. As a fresher, working in a start-up environment helps one understand the processes from scratch and allows an understanding of the foundation, practices & culture, which lead to a company’s success.”

with hiring candidates like us and I am aiming to
break the stigma that being visually impaired limits
the possibility and ability to do things. By providing

“Facing social prejudices due to a disability is something I have lived with all my life. Challenges that I’ve faced over the years have developed a certain amount of fear in me. Being included among the people with sight, gaining their trust and creating my space has always been a major challenge for me. Learning how to live without the ability to see at such a young age has been tough but definitely a major learning experience.
Coming from a lower middle-class family, having the ability to receive a good education was a privilege. Even though I was not able to get access to resources such as private tutors and advanced devices, I made it a point to make the most of what I was blessed with. Studying subjects like maths, science, accounting, and economics without the ability to see graphs or use a calculator was definitely harder than I thought.
Despite proving my capabilities, normalising having a visually impaired person in a working group of people has always been an uphill battle. Seeking employment seems no less than a miracle when you’re a differently abled person. There are still many misconceptions associated with hiring such candidates and I aim to break the stigma that being visually impaired limits the possibility and ability to work well. By giving me the opportunity to intern at Sony Research India, they have provided me with a great platform for doing so.”

from a college graduate to an employee.”
“Interning with Sony Research India is an experience in itself. Here, the development, growth and optimal learning experience of an intern is as important a goal as assigning/completing the projects. Everyone has been kind, helpful and very professional. The opportunity to interact and help one another in a personalised manner helps maintain a positive environment and has a significant impact on the employees. My manager Mr. Shunsuke Simon Shimomura and my mentor Urvashi Agarwal have always focused on my personal & professional development and made it a point to include me in many projects that catch my interest. Being a differently abled person, I never feel left out of a discussion or a meeting. They always ask for my opinions and consider them sincerely. Lastly, I have always been given the freedom to brainstorm, participate in experiments and suggest new approaches to innovate.
Working with Sony Research India has not just given my career the required boost, but it has also helped me to evolve and grow on a personal level, thereby transforming from a college graduate to an employee. During my tenure, I have gained a sense of professionalism, which is crucial for working in any MNC. It has helped me gain self-confidence and has provided me an edge over my peers. Working at Sony Research India has helped me imbibe the different aspects of a Human Resource professional’s job in myself, thus enabling me to tap upon various functional areas of HR for establishing my career in this domain. In addition to this, working at Sony Research India has helped me develop some interdisciplinary values like trust, working together, and sportsmanship.”
“Lastly, I would like to share some of my achievements that I hold close to my heart.
I am a recipient of the “Dhirubhai Ambani Scholarship” for outstanding performance in class 12 (CBSE), despite visual impairment. I was given the opportunity to deliver motivational and disability awareness speeches at Cisco, Delhi University, and the Human Library. In addition, I was honoured with first position Award by the Government of India for ‘2017 National I.T. Challenge for Youth with Disability’. I have also represented India and brought home a Silver medal at the ‘Global I.T. challenge for Youth with Disability 2017’ in Vietnam.”
